Janis Diane (McTaggart) Maharaj

In loving memory of 
Janis Diane Maharaj – Lalande
September 09, 1949-February 6th, 2022

Janis passed away surrounded by family at the Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane, Ontario on Sunday February 6th, 2022, at the age of 72. She will be greatly missed by her common-law husband Denis Lalande, her sons Terrence Baker (Tammy), Antony Baker (Leeann), and her daughter Joanne Baker Schachow (Christopher), her grand-children Michelle Baker, Crystal Baker and Cloe Baker.

Janis was predeceased by her father Joseph Edmond McTaggart in 1973 and her mother Janet Pearl McTaggart in 1978.  As per her wishes there will be no funeral celebrations; while her remains will be cremated and burial of ashes will take place in South River, Ontario later this spring. A celebration of life will take place later in the summer of 2022.

As a woman of Chippewas descent, Janis worked throughout her life as a frontline advocate for the Indigenous peoples of Northern Ontario.  In 1987, she met the love of her life and spend most of the next 35 years living the country-life outside of Cochrane.  As a nature and animal enthusiast, she spent much of her time traversing her many riverside trails with her beloved fur-babies. 

If desired, memorial donations may be made to either the Timmins and District Humane Society or the Lady Minto Palliative Care Unit and would be greatly appreciated.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the health care professionals of the Lady Minto Hospital for their diligent care, support, and kindness.

Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words, and will be missed beyond measure.
