Jacqueline Béchard (née Gagnon)

Notre chère mère, grand-mère, arrière-grand-mère et arrière-arrière-grand-mère nous a quittés à l’Hôpital de Smooth Rock Falls, le vendredi le 28 octobre 2022. Elle avait 96 ans.

Précédée dans la mort par son mari Jean-Paul Béchard (1926-1975), ses parents Emma (née Bilodeau, 1885-1967) et Arthur Gagnon (1881-1955), et ses sœurs Bernadette Goudreau (1908-1972) et Marguerite Lévesque (1916-1990), Jacqueline est née à Poularies (Sainte-Rose), dans le Nord du Québec, en Abitibi. Elle n’était encore qu’un bébé lorsque sa famille s’est installée à Departure Lake, dans le Nord de l’Ontario, où elle a grandi. Elle s’est mariée en 1947 à Smooth Rock Falls, où elle a habité le restant de sa vie.

Elle laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Denise (Couture), Aline, Robert, Lise (Yvon Ward) et Michel; ses petits-enfants Marc, Daniel, Paul, Lynn (Deana Ward), Kim (Steve Godin), Jason, Shawn, Andrée-Anne et François; ses arrière-petits-enfants Alyssa, Kent, Brielle, Carter, Maeve et Emmalyn; ses arrière-arrière-petits-enfants Arwen et Sikwan; ainsi que plusieurs neveux et nièces.

‘Jackie’ a aimé ceux et celles qu’elle a connus, et ils et elles l’ont aimée en retour. Toute sa vie, elle a aimé accueillir chez elle sa famille et ses amis, tout d’abord dans la maison qu’elle et son mari Jean-Paul ont bâtie en 1950, et par la suite dans son appartement de la rue Pine, et finalement à La Villa, où elle a habité pendant plus de vingt ans.

Elle aimait prendre des nouvelles de sa famille et de ses amis en jouant aux cartes, ou en dégustant un thé et des biscuits, sans oublier les bonbons (ah, ces bonbons!), ainsi que lors de nombreux voyages dans l’Est et le Sud de l’Ontario. Entendre cogner à la porte ou le téléphone sonner la mettait assurément de bonne humeur! Et ça sonnait souvent chez Jacqueline, que ce soit une sœur, la belle-famille, ses enfants, petits-enfants, neveux ou nièces souhaitant partager une nouvelle, ou bien voulant simplement pouvoir se confier à ‘Mémère Béchard’ ou ‘Matante Jackie’.

Veuve à l’âge de 49 ans, avec encore deux enfants à sa charge, elle a fait preuve de persévérance. En moins d’un an, elle qui était restée plus de trois décennies à la maison à élever ses cinq enfants, Jacqueline a fait un retour sur le marché du travail. Tout d’abord comme ‘taxi dispatcher’, et ensuite comme gardienne d’enfants et femme de ménage, et ce, jusqu’au-delà de ses soixante-dix ans, sans oublier de recevoir et visiter sa famille et ses amis, dans la bonne humeur et la fierté, toujours à l’écoute des autres. Et terminant ses journées à genou, avec la prière du soir, pour tout recommencer le lendemain.

La famille accueillera parents et amis à la Salle de l'Église Ste-Gertrude, 48 Hollywood Ave., le samedi 20 mai 2023 à compter de 9h30. Les funérailles suivront à 11h l’Église Ste-Gertrude. Ses cendres seront déposées à côté de son époux au cimetière de Smooth Rock Falls. Et évidemment, des bonbons y seront offerts.

La famille désire remercier le Dr Daniel Lebel et le Dr Jason Essue, ainsi que le personnel médical et de soutien de l’Hôpital de Smooth Rock Falls pour les excellents soins que Jacqueline a reçus durant toutes ces années, et en particulier depuis les sept dernières années, en soins de longue durée.

Jacqueline Béchard (née Gagnon)

Our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away at the Smooth Rock Falls Hospital in the early hours of Friday, October 28, 2022. She was 96.

Predeceased by her husband Jean-Paul Béchard (1926-1975), her parents Emma (née Bilodeau, 1885-1967) and Arthur Gagnon (1881-1955), and her sisters Bernadette Goudreau (1908-1972) and Marguerite Levesque (1916-1990), Jacqueline was born in Poularies (Sainte-Rose), in the Abitibi region of Northern Québec. While still an infant, the family moved to Departure Lake in Northern Ontario, where she grew up. She married in 1947 in Smooth Rock Falls, where she lived the rest of her life.

She leaves behind her children Denise (Couture), Aline, Robert, Lise (Yvon Ward) and Michel; her grandchildren Marc, Daniel, Paul, Lynn (Deana Ward), Kim (Steve Godin), Jason, Shawn, Andrée-Anne and François; her great-grandchildren Alyssa, Kent, Brielle, Carter, Maeve and Emmalyn; her great, great-grandchildren Arwen and Sikwan; and many nieces and nephews.

‘Jackie’ loved those she knew and they, in turn, loved her. Throughout her long life, she loved to  host family and friends, first in the home she and Jean-Paul built in 1950, later on in her apartment of many years on Pine St. and finally at La Villa where she lived for more than 20 years. She enjoyed catching up with family and friends over cards or a cup of tea, cookies and candy (always candy!) and during many trips to eastern and southern Ontario. A knock on the door or the ring of the telephone would always perk her right up! And ring it did, with siblings, in-laws, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews calling to share news or in need of a compassionate ear from “Mémère Béchard’ or ‘Matante Jackie’.

Widowed at the age of 49, and with two children still at home, she persevered. The following year, after three decades as a stay-at-home wife raising five children, she resumed working outside the home, first as a taxi dispatcher and then as a nanny and housekeeper, work she continued into her mid-seventies. Hosting and visiting family and friends throughout, laughing, proud and always ready to lend an ear. And ending each day praying on her knees at bedtime. Carrying on, as they say.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 9:30 am to 10:45 am at the Ste-Gertrude Church in Smooth Rock Falls. The funeral mass will follow at 11 am. Candy will be served.

The family wishes to thank doctors Daniel Lebel and Jason Essue and all of the medical and support staff at the Smooth Rock Falls Hospital for the wonderful care she received over the years, especially over the past seven-plus years during her stay in the Long Term Care Unit.
